Vintage Shops
A staple of every wardrobe. Here are the best of NYC.

Andy's Chee-pees
691 Broadway (bet 3rd & 4th St); 212-420-5980
This store located on Broadway attracts a ton of foot traffic from tourists drawn by the window display. A few vintage odds and ends (the usual old Ts, jeans, jackets and a bunch of cowboy boots) are scattered in between the new merchandise, which includes Emily Strange, Dickies, French Kitty, new retro bowling shirts, and kitschy purses. If it’s vintage you want, it’s vintage you’ll get at Andy’s, but be aware that most of their merch is brand-new.

Atomic Passion
430 E. 9th St (bet 1st Ave & Ave A); 212-533-0718
Get a blast from the past! You’ll be dropping bombs on the competition once you score some sexy swag from Atomic Passion. Established in 1945, this bastion of East Village vintage is simply scorching. Hand-labeled with cute descriptions and prices (a pair of disco sandals simply says “Hot!”) Mexican skirts, turn-of-the-century slips, pirate boots (tons of stuff for tiny feet), and Eighties purses share space with the equally wacky décor. Coated in orange paint and embellished with horseshoes, pop tops, and tinsel ornaments, entering the store is like stepping into your crazy aunt’s attic (in a good way). Cute and friendly shop girls, too!

Cheap Jack's Vintage Clothing
841 Broadway (@ 13th St); Union Sq; 212-777-9564
Located in the heart of Union Square, this veritable institution has been around for 30 years. The real gem here is their authentic selection of vintage dresses representing decades from the Roaring Twenties up to the hedonistic Seventies. Authenticity must be bought for a price, though - unlike its name, this Jack don't come cheap - he's got rent to pay.

Chelsea Girl Vintage Clothing
63 Thompson St (bet broome & Spring St); 212-343-1658
Need a glamorous showstopper for your next movie gala? Follow in the kitten heels of the Sex and the City girls and designers like John Galliano and Tom Ford, who regularly shop for inspiration. Flirty, feminine and fun, Chelsea Girl is your best bet for one-of-a-kind Technicolor patterned dresses of all shapes and sizes, full and flouncy skirts, crocheted tops and skirts from the 20s to the 70s. Check out the unique collection of handbags, too: on our visit, we saw a 60s handbag that was also a functioning telephone!

Eye Candy
329 Lafayette St (bet Bleecker & Houston St); 212-343-4275
Curated by Ron Caldwell, the six-year-old Eye Candy specializes in yummy and colorful fashion accessories of all kinds! Bakelite bracelets mingle with 20s rhinestones, chain mail disco purses, antique brooches, and more. This place is loved by the top magazines and fashion fiends of all kinds, who come to scoop up Seventies platform sandals, straw totes, flower pins, clutches, and an amazingly huge selection of unique sunglasses that channel the glamour of Jackie O. This place is primo for one-of-a-kind accessory finds – don’t delay, get some Eye Candy today!

Rags-a-GoGo

218 W. 14th St (7th & 8th Ave); 646-486-4011
Conveniently sorted by color and style, this shop offers moderate prices (buy in bulk and save more!) that won’t break the bank. Great for basics like deadstock Eighties T-shirts, jeans, blazers, jackets, cowboy boots and the ubiquitous polyester pant, this place is a one-stop shop for vintage basics. If you’re one of those kids who wouldn’t be caught dead at the Gap, grab your fashion staples here – celebs like Courtney Love have been known to do the same.

Resurrection
217 Mott St (@ Spring St); SoHo; 212-625-1374
Glamorous designers like Halston, Pierre Cardin, Pucci, and Betsey Johnson are represented at this lovely boutique. Well-preserved finds like authentic Eighties Op board shorts share rack space with Members Only jackets, patterned frocks, and the odd accessory (old-school LV purses, Sam & Libby ballet flats, and more). Sorted by color, this well-edited shop’s been around for about six years and is still going strong. Prices range from affordable ($40 dresses) to outrageous (a Metallica concert tee was $100), but if you’ve got to have it, you've got to have it - such is the price of looking good.

Screaming Mimi's
382 Lafayette St (W. 4th St & Great Jones St); 212-677-6464
You’ve got to respect anyone who’s big in Japan. The fashion fiends at Screaming Mimi’s have done just that! Renowned in Tokyo as a shrine of ‘kawai’ (cute) style, you can get the same funky stuff here without paying for the plane ticket! Check out the totally rad 80s prom dresses, Mexican skirts, and casual sportswear on the main floor, along with cases of juicy-colored jewelry, sunglasses, and superfine boots, platform shoes and sandals. On the upstairs level, grab some exquisite and exclusive stuff from designers like Pucci, YSL, and Diane von Furstenberg. We loved the crazy collection of patterned nylon slips – cherries, geometrics, and animal prints. A must-see!
