Pepe
Rosso to Go
149 Sullivan St (bet Houston & Prince St); 212-677-4555
Pepe Rosso is the first of the mini-franchise owned by Mauro
Servisi, devoted to mostly take-out and delivery. The mildly
frenzied but enthusiastic staff prepare the dishes like family.
Everything on the menu is under $10 and the cuisine is as authentic
and delectable as a fine bistro in Italy. The sandwich of air-cured
beef on moist focaccia with goat cheese and arugula is near-perfect;
other superb selections include antipasti, insalate and pasta
dishes.
Republic
37 Union Sq (bet 16th & 17th St); 212-627-7168
Besides "location, location, location," the best thing
about Republic are the prices. This Pan-Asian hotspot is a must
for the budget conscious as well as for trend seekers. The communal,
cafeteria-style lunch-hall tables, affordable noodle dishes,
and fresh juices all equate to one thing - a great time in an
unconventional atmosphere! And with a menu providing ample options
for vegetarians as well as traditional items such as the spicy
coconut chicken and fried wontons, you can be sure to find something
that will please every palate.
Tiny's
Giant Sandwich Shop
127 Rivington St (bet Essex & Norfolk St); 212-982-1690
Tinys is the perfect answer to whats for lunch,
where every sandwich is prepared to order so it is served at
its freshest. The small, hurried shop is mostly focused on takeout
orders. About half the menu is vegetarian friendly and equally
as tasty are the omnivorous selections. Renowned for having
both the best veggie burger as well as the best Chicken Po
Boy and hot-melt sandwiches, the soups are also excellent, with
recipes rotating on a seasonal basis.
Westville
210 W. 10th St (@ W. 4th St); 212-741-7971
Westville is a big-city café with low-key ambiance. Serving
a broad menu of exclusively comfort foods, this is Americana
cuisine at its best. Classically styled recipes that are expertly
prepared into generous portions make Westville a local favorite,
attracting a capacity crowd nightly. Perfectly prepared hot
dogs or burgers, macaroni and cheese and corn on the cob are
the best choices. Creative sides change daily, and the sumptuous
desserts are not to be missed.
'Wichcraft
49 E. 19th St (bet Park Ave South & Broadway); 212-780-0577
The magic
of Wichcraft is not in the name, but in the
recipes, preparation and ambiance created by chef Tom Colicchio,
who opened this moderately priced breakfast and lunch haven
in 2003. Start with the meticulously crafted primary attraction:
sandwiches on house-made country bread, the most popular include
the Sicilian tuna with shaved fennel and lemon, the braised
flank steak sandwich and the incomparable pork loin sandwich.
Breakfast sandwiches are served all day for the city that never
sleeps. Polish your meal off with the first-rate desserts of
Karen DeMasco scones, lemon bars, ganache-filled creamwiches
and peanut butter cookies.
