The
40/40 Club
6 W. 25th St; (@ Broadway); 212-989-0040
An
upscale sports lounge, 40/40 has as many professional athletes
in its VIP areas as it does on the plasma screens at every
table. At the bar, a DJ spins hip-hop tunes while patrons
watch live and taped sporting events that are projected on
to white walls. A well-guarded staircase leads to a second
bar and VIP seating, which provides an even better view of
the projections over the bar. Past the VIP area and secured
by more guards still, a series of private VVIP rooms each
decorated with autographed sports paraphernalia, holds pool
tables, big screen TVs, and plush furniture. Partially
owned by rapper Jay Z, 40/40 has hosted numerous celebs including
Sammy Sosa, Magic Johnson and Tracy McGrady - all of whom
have donated autographed jerseys to 40/40's collection.
Blondies
212 W. 79th St; (bet Amsterdam Ave. & Broadway); 212-362-4360
A
crowded Upper West Side sports bar owned by former Playboy
bunnies that serves fried food, Blondies knows what it's doing.
A staggering 36-TVs cover almost every inch of these bare
brick walls, which surround football enthusiasts who don't
mind standing on busy Saturday afternoon when the tables fill-up
fast. The Big Ten seems to be these college football fans
conference of choice, but you can generally count on seeing
Notre Dame playing to a crowd that's evenly balanced between
those who love and those who loathe the blue and gold.
Ship
of Fools
1590 2nd Ave; (bet 82nd & 83rd St); 212-570-2651
Three
separate spaces holding 40 TVs make-up this sports fans favorite,
which is among the best known jock haunts in the city. Picnic
type tables hold a predominantly male crowd that chows down
on very greasy fried food that's serviceable at best. For
those whose ADD isn't sated by the plethora of televised sports
that abound, a pool table and dartboards are available in
the backroom.
The
Sporting Club at 99 Hudson
99 Hudson St; (bet Franklin & White St); 212-219-0900
A
sports club of sorts, 99 Hudson is a solid compromise for
men who want to watch "the game" and their girlfriends
who want to go out on the town. In the main room, 45 TVs play
live sports with the six large screens being focused on local
coverage and high-profile match-ups. In a separate room entirely,
a house/hip-hop DJ spins dance mixes to an all-borough crowd
that dresses-up for the occasion. Baseball caps don't necessarily
carry over from TV watching to dancing and mingling. The upstairs
VIP room is offers a separate full-service bar, two-plasma
screen TVs and nine flat screen monitors.
Buster's
Garage
180 W. Broadway; (@ John St); 212-226-6811
Literally
attached to a shop that sells top-grade sports cars, Buster's
is every boy-at-heart's dream come true. One long room with
a bar stretching from plasma TV to plasma TV, this sports
bar is now opening its second summer to TriBeCa's predominantly
after-work Wall Street set with the promise of southern-influenced
bar food and cold beer. Tables are available in the back of
the room, but this crowd tends to roam outside onto the cabana
when the weather warms-up.
