Hiro
Lounge
366 W. 17th St; (@ 9th Ave); 212-727-0212
The
hottest upscale rock club this city has seen in a long time,
Hiro Lounge rocks an in the know model and music crowd with
DJs who prefer English rock from the 80s along with classics
like the Stones, the Doors and Nirvana. A Japanese lounge
area serves $12 cocktails to a VIP set that occasionally sees
the huge banquette area next door when the main room gets
too crowded. The owner of Sway and Wax is one of the engineers
behind this very cool spot.
Brite
Bar
297 10th Ave; (@ 27th St); 212-279-9706
Brite
Bar sometimes succeeds in establishing a scene of its own,
but it functions best as a reservoir for those awaiting the
opening of West Chelsea's many VIP clubs. A house and hip
hop DJ spins easy tunes to a 25-45 year old crowd of average
folks looking for a big night in the city. Priding itself
on signature energy drinks, this big room with its huge front
window is a stylish enough lounge for those who don't make
the cut at nearby Bungalow 8.
K
Lounge
30 W. 52nd St; (bet 5th & 6th Ave); 212-265-6665
How can a Kama Sutra themed lounge not be sexy? K Lounge's
unfortunate placement atop a third rate restaurant was a misstep,
but most everything else in this big red velvet lounge of
throw-pillows and plasma screen TVs tuned to Bollywood films
works well. Colorful and sweet specialty drinks don't come
cheap, which is no surprise since this place oozes opulence.
17
37 W. 17th St; (bet 5th & 6th Ave); 212-924-8676
Rock
and Roll, and sushi? You bet. The owners of Sweet 16 have
got another hit on their hands and despite this hotspot's
menu, the hipsters who pack this place are anything but cold
fish. A very young and pick-up minded crowd dresses-up to
pass this velvet rope where hip-hop and rock fill a fashionably
small room with a wall of sound. Seating is limited and the
place crowds up quickly so while the crowd is older than the
name implies, they're nowhere near 30.
