Bemelman's
Bar
(@ The Carlyle Hotel) 35 E. 76th St; (@ Madison Ave); 212-744-1600
Widely regarded as New York's first celebrity drink consultant,
Dale DeGroff, along with former manager Audrey Saunders, cleverly
fused old school and new school cocktail ideas when creating
the cocktail menu at this classic and not inexpensive bar
in the Carlyle Hotel. Freshly restored murals by "Madeline"
creator Ludwig Bemelman grace the walls of this storied bar
where old money and nouveau admirers come together after a
day of shopping on Fifth Avenue shopping and wandering through
Central Park.
Biltmore
Room
290 8th Ave; (bet 24th & 25th St); 212-807-0111
Chef Gary Robbins' celebrated new restaurant has received
endless praise for its Asian fusion menu, but living in this
upscale restaurant's immense shadow, is Jeffrey Mills' signature
cocktail menu. The menu's pitches start with light and spicy
fruit drinks, but packs a few curve balls like the sake-based
Melon Musei. The wine list here is impressive, but if you're
here for late night lounging, go with the cocktails.
Flatiron
Lounge
37 W. 19th St; (bet 5th & 6th Ave); 212-727-7741
Whether you think the glass is half-empty of half-full, you'll
be optimistic about ordering another flight at this stylish
art-deco lounge. Veteran drink consultant Julie Reiner calls
the shots at Flatiron Lounge (it's a figure of speech- PLEASE
don't order shots here). Put your fate in the hands of your
server and go with what ever's recommended as the menu changes
seasonally.
Olives
(@ The W Hotel) 201 Park Ave S; (@ 17th St); 212-353-8345
Gambling on Las Vegas based drink dealer Michael Macdonnel has
come up aces for Olives. A "botanical" drink menu,
matching this hotel bar's au natural motif, is highlighted by
the Millionaire Margarita (El Tesoro tequila, 150-year-old Grand
Marnier and freshly squeezed juice). Whether the cocktails compliment
the cuisine or vice versa is a matter of semantics, as it all
works out well.
Ouzerie
103 W. 77th St; (@ Columbus Ave); 212-579-7777
An easy to miss subterranean Mediterranean lounge under En Plo
restaurant, Ouzerie brings an interesting twist to the cocktail
world with what might be the first ever Ouzos Cosmo. Should
these column and stone heavy confines inspire you to try a more
traditional straight-up Ouzos, this spot has 20 from which to
choose.
