some cute
pins on the cheap. Rhinestone brooches, tweed flower pins,
and silk or leather flower pins are awesome. M&J Trimming
(a fashion insider's secret) sells stuff online at www.mjtrim.com,
if you're too lazy to leave the house.
Pattern
Recognition
Polka dot, argyle, houndstooth, paisley, plaid, herringbone,
stripes - optical illusions are everywhere. Argyle vests and
sweaters are available at Club Monaco, Express, H&M, Pringle,
and Juicy Couture. Hosiery from D&G, Etro, Wolford, and
Hue are covered in stripes, seams, plaids, flowers, and more.
Adorably patterned Wellies have reached critical mass and
are sold practically everywhere, in a deluge of prints: Burberry
plaid, Pucci prints, polka dots, camouflage, little Scotty
dogs, bumblebees, stripes, flowers, and more. J.Crew ($48)
and Tamara Henriques at Olive
& Bette's ($118) are your best bets. For more patterned
footwear, try some ballet animal-print flats from French Sole
(or Old Navy, for bargain hunters). Those with a penchant
for skate-punk casual can make do with those ubiquitous checkered
Vans.
Sweater
Girl
Knits are back in a big way for fall. Long scarves, gloves
and mittens, caps, sweaters, vests, cardigans, capes, ponchos,
shrugs, bolero jackets, and even skirts lend a soft, warm
touch to fall's fashion offerings. Fuzzy angora, luxurious
cashmere, wool, mohair, and acrylic yarns are available in
happy, bright colors to add some contrast. Cashmere is a must
for fall, and Express has amazing and soft cashmere V-neck
T-shirts in unusual colors, like orchid and acid green. H&M
offers adorable and affordable shrugs in aqua green and baby
pink ($19.90). Olive
& Bettes, Big
Drop, Scoop,
Barneys,
and Jeffrey stock the best in fall's cashmere pieces. Don't
forget the return of the poncho, available in various colors,
lengths, and styles to suit anyone.
Heavy
Metal
A soft sheen pervades the glimmery fabrics of fall. Once holiday
season hits, the girls are going to go for the bling - and
that means bringing on the glitz. Lurex-threaded knits, sequined
and beaded skirts and tops, and metallic leathers (Not Rational
bags at Barneys Co-Op are a great pick) loom large on the
horizon. Shiny silk and satin blouses, ruched, ruffled, and
high-necked, can be paired with wool slacks or a skirt. Satin
pencil skirts provide a sleek and classy look for daytime
or nighttime.
Lovely
in Lingerie
Innerwear-as-outerwear is happening once again. With the jackets
and blazers that are flying off the shelves, what better way
to show it off than to pair your staid velvet jacket with
a frilly camisole top or a lacy slip worn over pants or jeans?
The lingerie-inspired phenom has extended itself to accessories,
with peekaboo satin and lace-trimmed heels, satin shoes with
bows, and all sorts of velvety, lacy, gathered and ruched
purses and clutches with soft fabrics and feminine details.
Belts are similarly ladylike; cinched Fifties-esque waists
are gathered and tied together with ribbon bow belts. Velvet,
grosgrain, and silk are fabulous choices.
One
Step Ahead
Fall's individualist bent continues when you look at the different
styles of shoes available this season. Ballet-soled flats
and little kitten heels at Coach,
Marc Jacobs, French Sole, and Kate
Spade are great for the Holly Golightly in all of us.
Lower East Side rebels make do in Frye motorcycle boots, Marc
Jacobs combat boots, vintage cowboy boots, or fringed suede
moccasin boots. Those sheeptastic Uggs and Fuggs (fake Uggs)
are back in stores, for the teen set, in new colors like purple.
For a more demure look, round-toed shoes, pumps, and T-straps
are available. Sexy shoe-lovers will not be disappointed,
as the pointy-toed stiletto silhouette is a perennial favorite.
Knee-length and ankle-length leather boots come in delicious
shades this fall, including teal, green, and chocolate.
