Fall Into Fashion
Fall fashion hits the streets of NYC.
By: Charmaine Pang

It's that time of year again! The leaves are falling in Central Park, and the kiddies have gone back to school. What's a girl to do but fall head over heels for the latest styles? Things have changed since this lazy, hazy summer has passed. Long gone are those Sigerson Morrison flip-flop kitten heels; to replace them, some sort of fancy and expensive 'It' heel of the moment - how about those Fendi skyscraper pumps, with mirrored Empire-State-Buildingesque heels?

This fall, it's all about individualism (no style slaves, please - wear the trends within the

context of your own unique personal style) and eclectic mixing.

Head-to-toe anything is just so tacky. Isaac Mizrahi did it right in his "High/Low" show, which combined his pricey ready-to-wear looks with his bargain-basement designs for Target, you too shouldn't be afraid to change it up, and combine the usual with the unusual. Here's a list of a few trends that are happening this season. Don't be afraid to try them out, and mix and match to suit your style!

Color Wash
Color us green with envy: this season, it's the sexiest, richest color out there. You'll find a hue to suit any complexion, from the deepest emerald pine to grass green, muted sage, or mint. Other color trends include rich jewel tones, especially on velvet and cashmere. Emerald, sapphire and amethyst provide a beautiful foil for rich metals like silver and gold. The summer's obsession with teal, dusty rose, and chocolate brown continues into fall.

On a more Technicolor note, brights of all kinds are also hot for fall. Old-school denim pioneers Levi's has regained their cachet of cool by teaming with Lower East Side hipster art/fashion store Alife. Crayon-vivid red, yellow, orange, green, and blue jeans (of course) will be sold this fall (about $170), limited edition, of course. For those of you who want some color for less, try Diane von Furstenberg's Glamazonian cream color palette ($45). Available in similar shades (chartreuse, blue, red, orange, violet), the sheer 'war paints' can be layered on eyes, lips, and cheeks.

Make Me Up!
Makeup this fall is whatever you want it to be. Choose colors to match your moods and outfit. No more overly bronzed J.Lo glow - shine is done on the face with a more delicate touch. Cream colors can be smeared all over the face, giving a monochromatic look with a bit of shimmer. Try Nars' The Multiple in Copacabana ($35), and rub the cream color on lids, cheekbones, and lips for a natural look with a hint of shine.

For evening, try lining eyes with jewel-toned eyeshadows and liners, layering with mascara, and pairing with a lighter-colored mouth. The smoky eye is not a new concept, but when done in a color (other than black), it achieves new heights. Lip and cheek tints provide a natural-looking flush for any time. Tarte, Benefit, Hard Candy, and Urban Decay all have products that will help you get glowing (without anyone knowing!)

Jean Genie
Denim has done an about-face since summer, where bleachy, beachy, and weathered styles were all the rage. This fall's denim is more about refinement. Featuring a slightly higher waist than all those super-ultra-low-waist jeans (Paris Hilton, please take note), Fall 2004 denim styles showcase several style points. The cropped jean is still a fun and funky silhouette (pair it with some knee-high boots, or with some fun stockings or socks and an ankle boot). Other styles feature narrower legs, like a cigarette pant, which look great with pumps; trouser-style jeans, great for the workplace, are also widely available. Washes are less 'dirty' and instead feature a darker, deeper indigo hue. Hot new brands include James Jeans, Notify, Salt, and Loomstate. Other favorites include Seven, Citizens of Humanity, Rock & Republic, True Religion, and Yanuk.

Trail Blazer
Blazers and jackets are the key pieces to own this fall. Paired easily with work separates or relaxed casual looks, designers all over the block re-cut jackets in slimmer and cropped shapes. Important fabrics include tweed, tweed, and more tweed. Coco Chanel would be proud! Versace showcased tweed jackets in acid brights including plum and chartreuse. Corduroy and velvet also feature prominently; jackets at mass retailers (Urban Outfitters, Zara, H&M, Gap, J.Crew) feature unusual colors like lawn green, petal pink, and teal.
